I loved writing Black Market Blood from the perspective of the most ancient vampire, the Magus. To my surprise many readers have told me he is their favorite character. Is he a narcissistic, self-serving, seductive egomaniac who sometimes considers others’ needs? Or are his rare acts of kindness meant to accomplish selfish desires? Miranda Ortega, a half-vamp mortal is winning favor among the most powerful undead to his chagrin, but he must be careful how he responds to her. Is his tolerance an act of goodwill or calculated for self-preservation?

Exploring vampires’ reactions to the creation of a Day Fanger due to an aborted transformation arranged by the Magus, and the upheaval to their ancient norms is great for creating plot twists.
Cesare Borgia has never been a fan of Miranda. Her encouragement of the Common Caste vampires questioning Haute Caste leadership has only added to his hostility towards her. In his almost limitless lust for power what will he do to try and stop the Common Caste from disrupting the centuries old caste system of the vampire society?
In Black Market Blood Miranda, and the Magus, are forced together in the worst imaginable situation. In the midst of writing this book I was sure Miranda would fire me if she could. Crises, romances. and shifting allegiances will take the tale from Washington State to Qatar, Italy, and Cornwall. Of course, Miranda’s offspring decide to get involved, without her approval, adding to the chaos. The Magus continues to be spurned by Miranda’s daughter, Marie. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!
The frenemies relationship between Miranda and the Magus will get more complicated in the next book, Vampire Appreciation Night, which I’m writing now. Though the story begins in Granite Falls, Washington, it will move to Los Angeles for the first annual celebration of its kind. My vampires are glad to escape the short Pacific Northwest summers and head for the city they call, Los Vampiros.
Imagine all the self-absorbed, brilliant, competitive vampires from around the world gathering in one place for a popularity contest. Their uber competitive nature know no bounds? At the same time a Cuban vampire hunter has tracked down the Magus in L.A seeking to settle an old score. His desire for revenge spills over to affect Miranda’s family. She will have to request help from an unlikely ally that her partner Tristan once had an affair with. Life is never boring in Miranda’s world of nocturnal maniacs.
My vampires love the long, albeit chilly, fall nights in the Pacific Northwest. I find reading, coffee and chocolate help getting through what PNWers call the long dark. Hope you find lots of books to cozy up with this winter for a sweet escape.
Thank you for reading the Miranda Chronicles and motivating me to keep writing!
